Standards and Technological Sovereignty for the Insurance Industry

| ABSTRACT

The insurance industry is highly specialized, requiring a balance between aligning with international standards to support global integration and adapting to local regulations, cultural contexts, and market needs—particularly in emerging markets such as Vietnam. This combination of global standards and local adaptation presents both a challenge and a competitive advantage for the industry.

Technology standards play a vital role in enabling a transparent and connected insurance market—from facilitating secure data sharing among insurers and ecosystem partners to ensuring information security and enabling the auditability of AI systems used in underwriting and pricing. At the same time, technological sovereignty is becoming a key pillar of trust. Customer data must be protected in accordance with national legal requirements, while the insurance industry should progressively reduce its reliance on foreign technologies by strengthening domestic capabilities in cloud infrastructure, AI, and data analytics.

By advancing both technology standards and technological sovereignty:
– The insurance industry can strengthen its competitiveness, expand digital services, and deliver more personalized insurance products.
– The digital insurance market can develop in a more sustainable, transparent, and secure manner.
– Most importantly, closer collaboration among insurers, regulators, and the technology community can foster a self-reliant digital insurance ecosystem that delivers greater value to customers and society.
